PETALING JAYA: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has earned two Special Mention Awards at the MyPLACE Awards 2025 organised by the Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP).
The council, in a statement, said the recognition underscores its efforts in advancing urban placemaking while strengthening its commitment to developing sustainable, inclusive and vibrant public spaces.
This year, MBKS submitted three projects and secured two awards, reaffirming its focus on delivering quality, community-oriented green spaces.
The winning entries were the Rejuvenation of Kenyalang Park under the Community and Neighbourhood Park, Subcategory 3A: Public Park, and the Kuching Park Project (City and Town Park, Subcategory 2A: Below 50 Hectares).

Both initiatives reflect MBKS’ alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 13: Climate Action, by fostering green, resilient and people-friendly environments.
Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the recognition symbolises the council’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and community well-being through its Greenage Programme.
“This recognition is a tribute to the hard work of our Landscape Division, Building Division, Engineering Division and the strong support from the community.
“Parks and gardens are the lungs of our city, and through thoughtful design and planning, we have transformed these spaces into vibrant hubs that bring people together,” he said.
Wee also praised park users for their active role in maintaining the cleanliness and sustainability of the city’s green areas.
“Together with our community, we are ensuring that these green spaces remain beautiful, safe and enjoyable for everyone,” he added.
At the same time, MBKS reaffirmed its commitment to expanding green initiatives, strengthening public participation and positioning Kuching as a model city of sustainability, inclusivity and quality of life.
