KUCHING: Police have busted an online job scam syndicate operating out of a house in Kenyalang Park here, with five local men arrested.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the suspects, aged between 23 and 42, were detained during a raid at about 6.30 pm yesterday (May 25).

The operation was carried out by a team from the Commercial Crime Investigation Department and Narcotics Crime Investigation Department of the Sarawak police contingent headquarters.

“Police also seized computer equipment, mobile phones and several other devices believed to have been used in the operation.

“Initial investigations found the syndicate was operating a calling centre linked to non-existent online job offers.

“The syndicate is believed to have targeted victims from a neighbouring country, with all five suspects believed to have been working full-time in the operation,” he said in a statement.

All five suspects were brought before the Kuching Magistrate’s Court today (May 26), where police obtained a four-day remand order to assist investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and Section 120B of the Penal Code for criminal conspiracy.

Alexson urged those with information on criminal activities to contact the nearest police station or the Kuching district police control centre at 082-244444.
