KUCHING: After years of suspension, the direct AirAsia flight between Kuching and Pontianak is officially back in service, with operations set to begin on September 12 this year.
The renewed route offers a faster and more convenient alternative to the long and often challenging land journey, which typically takes over five hours and involves narrow, poorly maintained roads and extended border checks.
With the new 45-minute flight, travel between the two cities is expected to become significantly easier, benefiting not only tourists but also families with cross-border ties and those involved in trade and business.
Sarawak Tribune spoke to several Sarawakians to hear their views on what this direct connection means for them.

Muhammad Hafizul, 29, government servant:
“The resumption of the direct flight is a huge positive. It drastically reduces travel time, taking just 45 minutes compared to over five hours by road. This is a significant improvement, especially with AirAsia’s budget-friendly fares. It’s a strategic move that makes cross-border travel much more convenient.”

Mohd Hadi Moss, 37, entrepreneur:
“For many Sarawakians with family in Kalimantan Barat, this flight is a real game-changer. The long, tough journey by road is now replaced with a quick, comfortable flight. This will not only ease travel but also encourage more business exchange and provide easier access to healthcare in Kuching.”

Mahyan Affendi, 59, business owner:
“Last time I traveled, the road conditions were terrible, and the journey was time-consuming. This new flight option will be a great relief for people traveling to and from Pontianak. In terms of business, I hope it opens up more opportunities for trade and strengthens ties between the two regions.”

Muhammad Daniel Ezzuddin, 24, corporate management student:
“The direct flight is a significant boost for business and tourism. It offers a faster, cost-effective travel option, which will strengthen connections between Kuching and Pontianak. Local businesses will benefit from improved access to the Indonesian market, creating new opportunities for growth and partnerships.”

Mohd Amirul Fahmi, 33, entrepreneur:
“This new route will surely boost tourism between Sarawak and Kalimantan Barat. More visitors from Pontianak will now have the chance to enjoy what Sarawak has to offer. Events in Sarawak, especially international ones, will likely attract more people from Pontianak, benefiting our local economy.”
