KUCHING: Kuching Port Authority (KPA) has achieved a significant milestone, handling a record 325,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2025, marking a 6.6 per cent increase from the previous year.
KPA Chairman, Azizul Annuar Adenan, highlighted that alongside the container surge, the port also managed 10.42 million tonnes of cargo throughput, reflecting Sarawak’s robust economic activity and emphasizing that human capital remains the backbone of these operational successes.
“In 2025 alone, KPA conducted 242 internal and 199 external training programmes, including specialised seminars and workshops,” he said at the KPA Appreciation and Certificate Presentation Ceremony 2025 at the Port Operation Building here on Wednesday (Feb 5).
Addressing future infrastructure, Azizul revealed that KPA is aggressively expanding its facilities at the Senari Terminal to accommodate larger vessels and mitigate logistical shifts caused by the construction of the Samarahan-Sejingkat bridge.
The bridge, which has a 26-metre air draught clearance, will eventually restrict tall vessels from calling at the Pending Terminal.
“To address this, KPA will construct a 220-metre wharf extension with a 30-metre mooring dolphin at Senari Terminal between 2026 and 2028,” he said.
He also announced that a new container yard with a capacity of 200,000 TEUs per annum is slated for construction at Senari in 2026.
Regarding vehicle logistics, Azizul expressed gratitude to the Sarawak government and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development for the completion of the new vehicle yard at Senari Terminal.
The facility currently holds 2,500 vehicles, with an additional 1,000-vehicle capacity expansion currently in progress and expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2026.
The ceremony also served to honour the dedication of KPA’s workforce, specifically acknowledging 19 employees who retired in 2025, alongside the presentation of Excellent Service Awards (APC) and training completion certificates.
Also present were KPA’s board members, including Jennifer Lundai representing Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Chiew Chee Yau; Datuk Ir Janang Bungsu, and KPA’s General Manager, Robert Lau Hong Thiam.
