KUCHING: The Sarawak Land and Survey Department will organise Thai language classes to prepare officers for their role as the adopted agency for Thailand’s national contingent at the 2027 SEA Games.

Its director Datuk Awang Zamhari Awang Mahmood said the classes would help officers prepare for their responsibilities in managing the Thailand contingent.

“Insya-Allah, I intend to organise Thai language classes for those involved.

“Even if we cannot travel to Thailand, we can hold Thai language classes to prepare ourselves to be the best adopted agency for the Thai contingent,” he said.

He said this in his welcoming speech at the closing ceremony of Karnival Sukan LANDAS (LASSCAR) 2026, officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan at Penview Convention Centre here yesterday (Aug 15).

He added that LASSCAR also served as a platform to identify new and promising athletes for the Sarawak Land and Survey Department’s preparations for the 36th Pesta Sukan Ukur Se-Malaysia (PESUMA), which will be held in Perlis in 2027.

“At the 35th PESUMA in Perak in 2025, the Sarawak Land and Survey Department won four gold medals and the main challenge trophy after emerging champions in football, petanque, table tennis and darts.

“Insya-Allah, we will achieve even greater success at PESUMA 2027 in Perlis Indera Kayangan. That is our promise,” he added.

LASSCAR 2026 concluded yesterday after eight days of competition from Aug 8 to 15, involving about 1,600 athletes and officials from various LANDAS contingents and invited teams.

The carnival brought together contingents from LANDAS headquarters, as well as its Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, Miri, Limbang, Sarikei, Kapit, Samarahan, Bintulu, Mukah, Betong and Serian divisions.

Invited teams included the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development (MUDeNR), the Land Surveyors Board Sarawak (LSB) and the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (JUPEM) Sarawak.

LANDAS Kuching emerged as the LASSCAR 2026 champion, followed by LANDAS Headquarters as runners-up and LANDAS Limbang in third place overall.

LANDAS Kuching also recorded the highest medal tally with five gold and two bronze medals for a total of seven medals.

Meanwhile, LANDAS Miri was announced as the official organiser of LASSCAR 2028 during the event.
