BETONG: A section of Jalan Jambu Kerampak-Rantau Lelayang in Spak collapsed today (March 12) due to a landslide, cutting off access for local residents.
In a statement, Civil Defence Force (APM) Betong district officer Capt Siti Huzaimah Ibrahim said the collapsed stretch spans about 35 metres.
A four-member team, along with personnel from the Betong Public Works Department (PWD) and contractors, was deployed to assess the situation after receiving a distress call at 10.20 am.
Upon arrival, they found that the landslide was triggered by a blocked culvert, which was unable to withstand strong river currents following continuous heavy rain since Tuesday.
Monitoring efforts are ongoing as further soil movement has been detected.
Siti added that the landslide has left seven longhouses cut off from essential services, including access to schools, hospitals, and markets for daily necessities.
Although an alternative route (a logging road) is available, it is impassable during the rainy season and too far for regular use.
No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.
