MIRI: A 48-year-old man was arrested in the early hours on Friday after failing a roadside breath test during a late-night police sweep through one of Miri’s busiest arterial roads.
It was the latest enforcement action in a city that recorded the second-highest number of road accidents in Sarawak last year.
Officers from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of Miri District Police Headquarters stopped 91 drivers along Jalan Miri-Airport between 11pm Thursday and 2.30 am Friday, issuing 35 summonses for a range of offences including driving without a licence, illegal exhaust modifications and expired road tax.
The man who was stopped on suspicion of driving under the influence, had tested positive on a Screening Device 2 breath analyser and was taken to Miri Traffic Police Station. Blood samples were drawn at Miri Hospital’s Forensic Department for further analysis.
If convicted, he faces up to two years in prison, a fine of between RM10,000 and RM30,000, and a two-year driving ban.
