KUCHING: The Federal Women, Family and Community Development Ministry is currently reviewing the need to amend existing laws to address the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) technology involving school students.
Its Minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, said cases of students editing pornographic images using AI highlight the seriousness of this new challenge, which requires a serious approach involving various ministries and related agencies.
“I have personally informed the officers to look into our legal framework and see what can be further improved.
“We may need to amend the laws,” she said when met at the Majlis Ramah Mesra Kasih organised by her ministry at Wisma SABATI today.
Nancy said the ministry has received feedback from various parties and will conduct engagement sessions to identify the best approach.
“We take the comments as constructive feedback and we will have further discussions to enhance our effectiveness in dealing with this issue,” she added.
According to her, the ministry also sees the need to intensify educational programmes, particularly those related to digital literacy and parenting, to help parents understand and cope with the new challenges their children are facing.
“We want to expand these programmes, especially in rural areas.
“In urban areas, there are already many programmes available and people can choose which to attend, but rural areas need more support,” she explained.
She added that cooperation between ministries is also crucial in forming a more comprehensive protection ecosystem for young people against technological exploitation.
