KUCHING: The Miri Hornbill Closed 7s Rugby Tournament 2024, held on Saturday (Nov 30) at SMK Merbau, showcased impressive performances across all age groups.

In the Under-16 Boys Cup Final, SM Sains B emerged victorious, defeating SM Sains A 12-10 in a thrilling match that highlighted exceptional skills and sportsmanship from both sides.

Both SM Sains teams had dominated their respective groups throughout the tournament, and their final clash served as a fitting conclusion to their strong performances.

In the Under-16 Girls category, SMK Merbau claimed the championship title, continuing their impressive run in the tournament.

Despite fierce competition from just three teams, SMK Merbau’s teamwork and strategy ultimately proved decisive.

The Under-14 Boys category saw SMK Merbau A take the top spot, while SK Kg Luak Cogo triumphed in the Under-12 Boys category, adding another layer of local pride to the event.

The tournament also featured several other talented teams, including SMK Merbau’s B and C teams, Lugoss (SMK Lutong), and schools from across Miri.

Each champion team received a trophy and medals, underscoring the growing popularity of rugby in Miri.

Faqrul Hafiz Abu Bakar, vice president of the Miri Division Rugby Association told Sarawak Tribune recently that the performances of all the teams, particularly SM Sains, was outstanding throughout the tournament.

The Miri Hornbill Close 7s Rugby Tournament 2024 once again highlighted the strength and enthusiasm of the local rugby scene, with schools like SM Sains, SMK Merbau, and others laying the groundwork for future success in the sport.

Teams that participated — Under-16 Boys: SM Sains A, SM Sains B, SMK Merbau A, SMK Merbau B, SMK Merbau C, Lugoss A, Lugoss B, SMK Pujut; Under-16 Girls: SMK Merbau, Hornbill Girls, SMK Pujut; Under-14 Boys: SMK Merbau A, SMK Merbau B, SMK Pujut, Lugoss; and Under-12 : SK Kg Luak Cogo, SK Kg Luak Lizard, Tudan Jaya Phoenix, and KRP Mini & Youth.
