MIRI: Nearly 2,000 residents in Kampung Long Loyang and Long Batan are set to receive safer and more reliable clean water supply by early 2027.

The improvement will be made possible through the implementation of the Long Loyang Clean Water Supply Plant project, which is being carried out under the Highland Development Agency (HDA) programme.

Telang Usan assemblyman, Datuk Dennis Ngau, said the project commenced last year and is expected to be completed within 18 months.

He said a recent inspection of the project site found that construction works are progressing smoothly and according to schedule.

“I hope this project can be completed fully within the stipulated timeframe so that residents of both villages can enjoy a more organised, safe and continuous clean water supply as soon as possible,” he said in a report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) today (June 7).

Dennis visited the Long Loyang Clean Water Supply Plant construction site on Saturday (June 6) to inspect the progress of the ongoing works.

He said residents of Kampung Long Loyang and Long Batan previously relied on a gravity-fed water supply system and river water sources for their daily needs.

However, the gravity-fed system frequently experienced disruptions, particularly during dry weather and drought seasons, making it difficult for residents to obtain a stable water supply.

He added that providing access to clean water remains one of the key priorities of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government in its efforts to improve the quality of life of the people, especially those living in rural and remote areas.

Apart from Long Loyang, several other clean water supply projects are being implemented in areas including Kampung Long Pilah, Daleh Long Pelutan (Long Miri), Long Bemang and Long Bedian.

“The implementation of these projects reflects the government’s continued commitment to strengthening basic infrastructure and ensuring that more residents in interior areas gain access to quality clean water supplies,” he said.

He added that the government will continue to monitor the implementation of each project to ensure they are completed according to specifications, quality standards, and the stipulated timeframe for the well-being of the people.
