SIBU: The Police has arrested a local man for allegedly threatening Malaysian singer-songwriter, producer and actress Nor Ashima Ramli, better known as ‘Baby Shima’ on social media recently.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili confirmed that the 35-year-old lorry driver was picked up at Kota Sentosa, Kuching at 9.15 pm last night (Dec 31).

Also seized from him is his smartphone, believed to be used for the act.

“The suspect will be remanded today at Sibu Court to facilitate investigations,” he said in a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities and network service.

Zulkipli urged the public to be more responsible in making any comments or uploading any statements on social media so as not to overstep the boundaries and violate the law.

On Monday (Dec 30), Baby Shima filed a police report at 11.31pm after receiving a death threat on social media.

In a Facebook post, the 32-year-old dangdut artist revealed that the threat was directed at her by an individual who expressed dissatisfaction with her presence in Sarawak.

The controversial comment, which sparked widespread outrage, read: “Lagi u masuk Sarawak. Hati-hati. Your enemy now aim you sudah. Jangan pulang Malaya dengan mayat saja, ok. Take care Baby Shima.”

The comment sparked outrage among netizens, with many showing support for the singer.

“Death threats are not part of Sarawakian culture, and anyone who makes them should face stern action,” one user commented.

Others condemned the individual involved, saying such a comment negatively impacted Sarawak’s reputation as a community known for its kindness, peace, and harmony.
