BINTULU: The remote area of Lusong Laku in Belaga holds immense potential to be developed into a modern agricultural hub and an attractive eco-tourism destination.
Murum assemblyman, Kennedy Chukpai Ugon, said the fertile land and rich natural resources make Lusong Laku one of the most promising areas for sustainable development in Sarawak’s interior.

According to him, Lusong Laku is not only suitable for paddy cultivation and cash crops such as vegetables and tropical fruits, but it also boasts unique tourism attractions like the O’ong Peji’ Waterfall, fondly referred to as Sarawak’s ‘Mini Niagara’.
“With strategic planning and investment, Lusong Laku can become a new economic driver for the state, especially for the Penan community and residents of Ulu Sungai Linau,” he said.
He made these remarks while leading a working visit to Lusong Laku from April 28 to 30.
The visit also included inspections of the Handicraft House, community homestay areas, SK Lusong Laku, the local health clinic, as well as engagement sessions with the local community.
At the same time, Chukpai urged that a holistic development plan for Lusong Laku be implemented without delay, with the active involvement of technical agencies, district administration, and the local community.
“Agricultural and tourism development must be pursued concurrently, supported by essential infrastructure such as proper road access, electricity and clean water supply, as well as quality education and healthcare services,” he added.
He noted that one of the key challenges to be addressed urgently is the poor condition of the former logging road, which hampers access to the area.
“I believe that through close cooperation between the state government, technical agencies such as JKR, URDA, the Department of Agriculture, and the local community, we can transform Lusong Laku into a model of sustainable rural development in Sarawak,” Chukpai said.
