KUCHING: Sarawak’s position under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) must continue to be respected beyond symbolic commemorations, as it remains fundamental to the state’s constitutional status and future within the Federation,
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said Sarawak Day commemorates the beginning of Sarawakians administering their own homeland on July 22, 1963, marking the start of the state’s responsibility to govern itself and shape its own future.
“Sarawak later became a founding partner in the formation of Malaysia through the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). We entered Malaysia as a partner, not as an extension of the Federation of Malaya. This distinct position was reaffirmed through the 2021 constitutional amendment.
“Our rights and interests must therefore continue to be respected, not only on commemorative occasions but in our ongoing relationship with the federal government,” he said during the 722 Walk in Commemoration of Sarawak Day at the MBKS grounds here today (July 22).
Wee said local authorities play an important role in translating the spirit of self government into effective governance by delivering efficient public services, maintaining infrastructure and fostering inclusive communities.
“Self-government is not only our history. It must be demonstrated through good governance every day,” he said, adding that Sarawak’s bargaining power stems not only from its resources but also from the unity of its people, while political differences should never undermine the state’s constitutional rights or long term interests.
Calling on Sarawakians to uphold the spirit of Segulai Sejalai, Wee said unity and multicultural harmony remain the foundation of the state’s continued progress.
“When Sarawak is united, our voice is stronger. When our institutions are strong, our future is more secure,” he said.
