SARAWAK hosting Special Olympics Malaysia 6th National Games 2026 and competing in 13th ASEAN Para Games 2025 strengthens its image as a para sports powerhouse.
Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, said various initiatives have been implemented to encourage the active participation of persons with disabilities (PwDs) in sports, both at national and international levels.
“These efforts not only open up opportunities but also elevate the potential and dignity of PwDs on the global stage.
“This year, PwD empowerment was carried out through two platforms of sports organisation and participation, namely the hosting of Special Olympics Malaysia 6th National Games Sarawak 2026 and Participation of Sarawak PWD Athletes in the 13th ASEAN Para Games, Korat, Thailand 2025,” she said.
She said this in her ministerial winding up speech at Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today (May 19).
She added that the Special Olympics biennial event brought together 778 participants, including athletes, coaches, officials and support staff from 11 states and Federal Territories, namely Sarawak, Sabah, Penang, Kedah, Perak, Selangor, Melaka, Pahang, Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur and Labuan.
“The Special Olympics Sarawak contingent was crowned overall champion after winning 176 medals comprising 56 gold, 68 silver and 52 bronze.
“Throughout the event, 65 athletes from Sarawak received the Bravery Medal,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian contingent sent a total of 222 athletes to compete in the 13th ASEAN Para Games in Korat, Thailand, held from January 20 to 26.
“This participation and success not only brought pride to the nation but also enhanced Sarawak’s image as a powerhouse in para sports.
“In recognition of these achievements, the Sarawak Government, through the Premier’s initiative, allocated RM2.0 million for the organisation of the Special Olympics Malaysia 6th National Games Sarawak 2026 in Bintulu, and also provided RM143,000 in incentives to 19 Sarawak para athletes who won medals at the 13th ASEAN Para Games in Korat, Thailand,” she said,
