BAU: A local man was hauled before the Magistrate’s Court here on Friday (May 8) to face six charges involving housebreaking and disposing of stolen property linked to incidents across Singai.

The 23-year-old, who is unemployed, was slapped with two charges under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking and four charges under Section 414 of the Penal Code for disposing of stolen items.

Section 457 carries a jail term of up to five years and a fine upon conviction, while the sentence may be extended to 14 years if the offence involves theft.

Meanwhile, Section 414 provides for imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine, or both upon conviction.

Bau police said the charges were read before Bau Magistrate, Danny Ngumbang Engkujang, with no plea recorded from the man.

The court has granted bail at RM6,000 for each charge, but he failed to post bail.

Based on the charges, the man allegedly broke into two premises around Bau and later disposed off stolen property at four separate locations, including a recycling company along Jalan Batu Kawa-Matang Kuching, between April 16 and 28.

He is currently remanded at Puncak Borneo Prison pending further mention at the Magistrate’s Court here on May 26.
