KUCHING: A local man whose alleged actions at the Kuching Food Festival triggered widespread outrage on social media, has been arrested for allegedly recording an indecent video of a woman.
The 29-year-old was taken into custody at around 9.20pm last Saturday (Aug 1).
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said police also seized a smartphone believed to be linked to the incident.
Background checks found that he has no prior criminal record, and has been remanded for two days to facilitate investigations.
The case is being probed under Section 509 of the Penal Code for insulting the modesty of a person by recording a video.
If convicted, the suspect may face a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
Alexson reminded the public to respect the privacy and dignity of others and refrain from engaging in acts that violate the law.
The arrest followed a viral social media incident in which festival-goers made a citizen’s arrest after he was allegedly caught attempting to film a woman without her consent.
Netizens claimed the suspect’s phone contained numerous videos of women allegedly filmed without their knowledge.
However, police have yet to confirm the contents of the device.
