KUCHING: A 41-year-old unemployed man was fined RM2,700, in default six months’ imprisonment, by the Magistrate’s Court here today (June 22) for criminal intimidation after threatening his sister-in-law with a parang.

Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali imposed the sentence on Mohamad Yazid Abdul Jalil after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code.

The offence carries a punishment of imprisonment for up to seven years, a fine, or both upon conviction.

According to the charge, Mohamad Yazid criminally intimidated his 35-year-old sister-in-law by threatening her with a parang in front of a house along Jalan Bako at about 2 pm on Oct 30, 2024.

Facts of the case revealed that the incident occurred when the complainant arrived at the house to pick up her two biological children and sounded her vehicle horn outside the residence.

The accused became angered by the action and emerged from the house carrying a sheathed parang before approaching the complainant.

He then brandished the weapon in front of her face, causing her to fear for her safety.

Police arrested the accused on Nov 16, 2024, at about 10.15 pm in the compound of Gita Police Station during an integrated crime prevention operation conducted by officers from the station.

Investigations found that the accused had admitted his involvement in the incident.

A subsequent police-led search at his residence resulted in the seizure of a green-sheathed parang believed to have been used during the offence.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Aidil Akmal Sharidan. The accused is unrepresented.
