KUCHING: A man was fined RM4,000, in default eight months’ imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here today for stealing various items, including salon equipment.
Senior Assistant Registrar Nuraini Ahmad imposed the sentence on 32-year-old Steven Entika Sabestian Rengian after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 379 of the Penal Code.
Under Section 379 of the Penal Code, theft is punishable with imprisonment for up to seven years, or a fine, or both.
Entika committed the offence at about 9 pm on June 5 at a premises near Lorong Tabuan Dayak 16, where he stole a steamer iron, two hair straighteners, a shoe rack, a marble table, a coffee table, a toolbox set, a basket containing safe deposit box keys, a pair of Adidas shoes, five safes, a whiteboard, a fingerprint door access device, a grinder, a salon light and a chair cushion.
According to the facts of the case, the 28-year-old complainant discovered that several items kept at the premises, which was undergoing renovation, were missing and suspected they had been stolen.
The total loss was estimated at RM5,000.
Investigations revealed that Entika had stolen the items belonging to the complainant and later offered some of them for sale on Facebook.
The complainant subsequently identified several of the stolen items being advertised through Entika’s Facebook account.
The case was prosecuted by prosecuting officer Inspector Nur Shafia Nyaie Illin, while the accused was unrepresented.
