KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here today sentenced a 22-year-old local man to a fine of RM900 or two weeks’ imprisonment for stealing electrical cables of various sizes belonging to his peers.

Shamser Pauzi, the accused, pleaded guilty to a charge which was read before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

According to the charges, he was charged with stealing electric cables of various sizes belonging to a 22-year-old man, under section 379 of the Penal Code.

He allegedly committed the offence at a house in Taman Sukma, Petra Jaya here, at 2.47am, last July 25.

Upon conviction, he can be sentenced up to seven years of imprisonment or a fine or both.

According to the facts of the case, during the incident the complainant found that electric cables of various sizes stored behind his house were missing.

The complainant then made a police report for further action leading to the arrest of the accused by a police team from the Kuching District Headquarters Criminal Investigation Division (IPD).

The results of the investigation revealed that the accused could be traced through closed circuit camera (CCTV) footage.

Further investigation also found that the complainant and the accused were school friends and the accused had reportedly worked with the complainant before.

The prosecution of the case was handled by the Prosecuting Officer, ASP Rogayah Rosli while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
