PADAWAN: A local man fired a shotgun into the air to scare off a would-be cable thief outside his house at Jalan Dogan last night (March 12), but ended up being detained himself.

The gunshot initially sent the suspect fleeing, but he reportedly returned later to continue the theft.

Police were later alerted to the scene to take action on the suspect.

Padawan Police Chief, Supt Mohd Irwan Hafiz Mohd Radzi, confirmed the incident when contacted today.

“Acting on information, police arrested a 21-year-old suspect allegedly involved in cable theft.

“Meanwhile, a 58-year-old man was also detained to assist in investigations for firing a shot in the air.

“A shotgun used in the incident was seized,” he said.

Further checks confirmed that the man had a valid licence for the firearm.

Mohd Irwan said the case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for cable theft and Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960 for discharging a firearm in public.
