KUCHING: A 23-year-old man was sentenced to a total of 24 months’ jail at the Magistrates’ Court here yesterday after pleading guilty to concealing a stolen engine block and self-administering dangerous drugs.
Anderson Dana Stephen Rentap was sentenced by Magistrate Leona Dominic Mojiliu to 12 months’ jail for concealing stolen property, with the sentence backdated to his arrest on Sept 4.
For the drug offence, he was sentenced to another 12 months’ jail and ordered to undergo police supervision for three years upon completing his sentence. The court ordered both sentences to run consecutively.
For the first offence, Dana was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, for voluntarily assisting in concealing property he had reason to believe was stolen.
The offence involved an engine block belonging to a 40-year-old complainant, which was recovered from Dana at a food-court, Moyan Square, Jalan Moyan, on Sept 4.
The court heard that the complainant had discovered the theft after opening his motorcycle workshop at PRC Garden Shophouse, Jalan Matang-Batu Kawa, at about 9 am on June 10.
He found the workshop in disarray and noticed that several newly purchased motorcycle spare parts were missing.
An inspection found that the roller shutter at the rear of the workshop had been forced open, with signs of a break-in.
Among the items reported stolen were six engine head blocks, two Leo carburettors, several Wave 125 engine components belonging to a customer, two ZIAN sport rims, five motorcycle chains, 10 racing valves, two Zhipat Y15 lamps, four Fasstek racing camshafts, six Brembo master pumps, four Redlio exhausts and two Y15 engine crankcases.
A green rubbish bin was also reported missing. The total loss was estimated at about RM9,000.
Police later received information on Sept 4 that a man had been detained by a member of the public at Man Xiang Lou food court.
A team from the Padawan District Police Headquarters subsequently went to the location and arrested Anderson, recovering one engine block from him.
Investigations found that the engine block was linked to the earlier theft.
The item was subsequently identified by the victim through markings found on the engine block, confirming it as his property.
Police investigations also found that Anderson had concealed the stolen engine block, resulting in him being charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code.
For the second offence, Dana was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for self-administering methamphetamine and amphetamine.
The court heard that on Nov 30, 2025, police personnel from the Padawan District Narcotics Crime Investigation Department brought Anderson for a urine test.
An initial urine screening tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.
His urine sample was subsequently sent to the Sarawak General Hospital Pathology Department for analysis, which confirmed the presence of both substances.
Methamphetamine and amphetamine are listed as dangerous drugs under the First Schedule of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Fauzulutfi Suriani appeared for the prosecution. The accused were unrepresented at both the proceedings.
