KUCHING: A 47-year-old man lost RM117,600 after falling victim to a fake online tender scam involving the supply of tables and chairs for a local school canteen.
Kuching Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, said the victim received a WhatsApp message from an unknown individual on Wednesday (May 20) offering the tender.
He said the victim was later given several phone numbers of supposed suppliers to facilitate the booking process.
“The victim then made five money transfers into three different bank accounts on the same day amounting to RM117,600 for the purchase order,” he said.
Alexson said the victim only realised he had been cheated after checking with the school and discovering that no such order had been made.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
