KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng has hailed KANTIN’s dual nominations at the 2025 World Culinary Awards as a powerful affirmation of the city’s culinary identity and a timely boost to its bid to be recognised as a Unesco Creative City of Gastronomy.

In his recent statement, Wee congratulated the contemporary Bornean restaurant collective, describing the international recognition as a testament to the creativity and innovation of young Sarawakians driving the local food industry.

“KANTIN’s achievements show that our food culture is not only unique but world-class.

“This strengthens our case as we campaign for Kuching to be designated as a Unesco Creative City of Gastronomy,” he said.

Wee said the recognition reflects the vibrancy of Kuching’s food culture, which thrives on young Sarawakians daring to innovate while honouring tradition.

He added that KANTIN’s journey from Kuching to the global stage is a story of vision, resilience and creativity, inspiring not just the F&B industry but the city as a whole.

“Food is part of our identity. When Sarawakian restaurants succeed internationally, it is not just their win — it is Kuching’s win.

“Together, we are building a legacy that celebrates our unique flavours, nurtures creativity and inspires the next generation.”

He also reaffirmed his office’s commitment to supporting local culinary talents and pledged continued collaboration with the food and creative industries to elevate Kuching’s international profile.
