KUCHING: MBKS has mobilised its teams to carry out urgent clearing works on scupper drains at 3rd Mile and Stutong to mitigate flash flooding.
Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the operation was part of the council’s proactive efforts to ensure drainage systems remain clear and functional, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
He noted that scupper drains play a crucial role in channelling excess rainwater, but blockages caused by rubbish, fallen leaves and silt can disrupt water flow and increase the risk of flooding.
MBKS personnel were on the ground clearing clogged drains and removing accumulated debris to restore proper water flow.
The exercise forms part of the council’s ongoing maintenance programme to safeguard public safety in flood-prone areas.
“While we continue to strengthen our maintenance efforts, public cooperation remains essential,” he said.
“We urge the community not to dispose of waste into drains, as keeping the environment clean is key to preventing avoidable flooding.”
Wee added that MBKS will continue taking immediate action while improving drainage conditions across Kuching South to ensure a safe and resilient city.
