KUCHING: Four major media associations have expressed their heartfelt appreciation to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for the one-off RM700 incentive allocated to private media practitioners registered with their respective associations as of Dec 1.

The Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA), Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA) Sarawak branch, Pertubuhan Wartawan Bebas Kuching (Pewarta), and Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) issued statements yesterday (Dec 3), welcoming the Premier’s announcement during his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN).

KDJA president Ronnie Teo Teck Wei said the allocation demonstrates the state government’s unwavering commitment to media welfare.

“This financial assistance will provide meaningful support, directly helping our members meet their professional and personal needs,” he said, adding that the government has consistently recognised the important role of journalists, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These previous disbursements, along with the current allocation, clearly show the state government’s appreciation for media practitioners who dedicate themselves to delivering accurate and timely information to the public,” he added.

CJA Sarawak chairwoman Nancy Nais also expressed her gratitude, noting that the incentive reflects ongoing support for media professionals.

“This initiative underscores the state government’s recognition of the vital role journalists play in informing the public and promoting social harmony. Your continuous support uplifts our fraternity and motivates us to uphold professionalism, integrity, and excellence in our work,” she said.

Pewarta president Peter Sibon likewise thanked the Premier for extending financial assistance to its members.

“This is the second time the Sarawak government has provided financial support to the media fraternity in Sarawak,” he said, noting that the Premier’s policies have consistently benefited people from all walks of life.

“His social inclusivity policy has ensured that all strata of Sarawak society have benefited since he took office on Jan 13, 2017,” Sibon added.

The Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) also welcomed the announcement, saying it reflects the state government’s recognition of the media’s contributions and its role as a key partner in Sarawak’s development.

NSJA President Chai Chon Chin described the initiative as a meaningful acknowledgment of journalists’ essential work in serving the public, particularly those in the private sector.

While noting that the RM700 incentive does not address broader and long-standing challenges in the media industry—such as rising operational costs, remuneration concerns, and the need for continuous training—Chai said the move is an encouraging step that signals government support for the profession.

“The association also hopes this initiative could pave the way for more structured and sustainable assistance, especially in areas such as professional development, welfare protection, and opportunities for young journalists,” he said.

NSJA further reiterated its readiness to collaborate with the state government and relevant agencies to ensure the incentive is disbursed efficiently and reaches all eligible recipients.

Chai thanked the state government for the recognition and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to upholding professionalism, ethical reporting, and public-interest journalism for the benefit of Sarawakians.

All four associations expressed hope that the Premier will continue prioritising media welfare as practitioners carry out their duties in serving Sarawakians.
