KUCHING: A career in the military is seen as becoming less popular among youths due to factors such as salary, job risks, and changing career interests among the younger generation.

Muhammad Amir Salmi, a 25-year-old executive butler at Waterfront Hotel, believes that many youths today are more attracted to private sector jobs that offer higher salaries and faster career growth opportunities.

According to him, benefits and allowances in the military are often viewed as not comparable to the challenges and sacrifices required in the profession.

“The military career carries high risks because personnel must always be prepared to face dangerous situations and the possibility of losing their lives while carrying out their duties,” he said.

He added that military life also requires strict discipline and sacrifices in terms of time with family, causing many young people to lose interest in joining the field.

Meanwhile, trainee teacher, Nur Athirah Wan Mazuki, 25, said she is not interested in joining the military because the profession demands high commitment and readiness to face safety risks.

She said she preferred jobs that provide more flexibility and opportunities for self-development based on personal interests and strengths.

“We feel that the military field does not suit what we want and it restricts our own capabilities,” she said.

For Abang Muhd Yusuf Abang Suhaili, 33, he admitted that he once aspired to become a soldier but did not have the opportunity to be selected.

Nevertheless, the public servant still views the military as a platform to build discipline and instil patriotism among the younger generation.

“I believe military training can improve discipline and inspire young people to love their country and state more,” he said.
