KUCHING: A political observer says the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) is the most significant and far-sighted investment ever made by the Sarawak government for the future of the state and its people.
Datuk Peter Minos described the initiative as a momentous and transformative policy that would secure Sarawak’s long-term social and economic progress, particularly by expanding access to higher education for all Sarawakians regardless of background.
“Among the many good things done by our Premier and the Sarawak government, FTES stands out as the very best. It is truly wise, momentous and unmatched in shaping a better future for Sarawak and its people,” he said.
Minos, who is also the Serian District Council (SDC) chairman, thanked Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the state government, describing FTES as the greatest gift to Sarawakians, especially families facing financial hardship.
“For those struggling financially, free access to tertiary education is almost God-sent. Nothing compares to giving our children and future generations a university education free of charge,” he added.
He said the scheme would ensure a brighter future for Sarawak by producing educated citizens equipped with skills and expertise, which form the foundation of economic advancement, social stability and long-term development.
“Sarawak’s future is clearly assured because educated people mean better skills, stronger expertise and sustained progress, alongside peace, stability and social harmony,” he added.
Minos noted that beneficiaries of FTES would gain access to better knowledge, improved employment opportunities and higher incomes, while fostering creativity and innovation among the younger generation.
Drawing from personal experience, he said education had been a key driver of social mobility for many Sarawakians from rural and disadvantaged backgrounds.
“Many of us came from poor rural areas, yet we enjoy a better life today because of education. Government scholarships in the 1960s opened doors and created opportunities that changed our lives,” he said.
He also highlighted Sarawak’s leadership role in Malaysia through the implementation of FTES, describing the state as a pioneer in building a progressive and inclusive future.
“With modern knowledge, English proficiency and STEM skills made accessible through FTES, Sarawak is on track to become the most progressive and advanced region in Malaysia, possibly by 2050 or even earlier,” he said.
Minos added that the scheme has instilled a renewed sense of pride and confidence among Sarawakians, noting that its impact is already being felt.
While acknowledging that praise should be measured, he said the implementation of FTES represented an exceptional achievement by the state leadership.
“In all honesty, the introduction of FTES is one of the finest and most excellent decisions ever made for the people of Sarawak,” he added.
