MIRI: A 77-year-old man reported missing in Miri last week was found dead near Batu Niah last night (Sept 21).

The victim, Chong Nyuk Fan, was last seen leaving his home in Senadin on Sept 14 in a white Toyota Hilux. He did not inform his family of his whereabouts, and the vehicle was later found abandoned near Simpang Ngu, Batu Niah, on Sept 17.

His family lodged a police report on Sept 21 after failing to trace him despite their own search efforts.

That evening, a joint operation by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Batu Niah and police was launched following a call from Batu Niah police station.

A six-member Bomba team led by operation commander PBT II Rary Binjie arrived at the scene at 9.44 pm.

Within 20 minutes of combing the area, searchers discovered Chong’s body in tall grass by the roadside about 28km from Batu Niah.

Bomba Sarawak confirmed the remains were identified by the family based on his clothing, black sandals, and a Rolex watch.

The body has been handed over to police for further investigation.
