MIRI: A total of RM75,838 in Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants was disbursed to eight various organisations in a ceremony officiated by Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Rosey Yunus, who is also the Bekenu assemblywoman.

Held in Bekenu, the ceremony highlighted the government’s continuing commitment to supporting community initiatives, with a particular focus on the welfare of senior citizens in rural Sarawak.

Among the allocations, a significant portion has been earmarked for improvements at the Senior Citizens Activity Centre (PAWE) in Subis.

The deputy minister announced that RM200,000 has been approved for the construction of a covered hall linking the existing PAWE building and the neighbouring Community-Based Rehabilitation Centre (PDK).

“This shared space will serve both PAWE and PDK for joint activities,” she said, noting that implementation will be carried out by the Public Works Department (PWD) in the near future.

In addition, RM260,000 has been allocated for further upgrades to the existing PAWE facility. The funding will be used to enhance the centre’s safety and accessibility features, including the installation of new fencing, pathway improvements, and flooring upgrades.

“These improvements are essential, particularly as the centre is located some distance from other settlements. Our aim is to ensure a safe and comfortable environment where our elderly residents can gather, engage, and participate in meaningful activities,” she said.

She added that the upgrades reflect the ministry’s broader goal of promoting healthy and active ageing among senior citizens.

“We want our senior citizens to remain active and healthy. A well-equipped and welcoming space will encourage more of them to come forward, take part in activities, and enjoy their golden years in good health and good company,” she said.

The deputy minister also encouraged community leaders to assist in registering individuals aged 60 and above as members of PAWE Subis, noting the importance of inclusive community participation.

“With strong community support and improved facilities, we hope to see more elderly individuals embracing the opportunities PAWE offers,” she said.

The MRP initiative continues to serve as a vital platform for grassroots development, particularly in rural constituencies such as Subis, where community-based infrastructure plays a key role in local wellbeing.
