KUCHING: The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has confirmed that the issue involving a motorist who was issued a summons for failing to show valid road tax and insurance during a roadblock in Mukah is resolved.
Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the incident occurred due to poor internet and mobile network coverage in Mukah, which prevented the motorist from verifying his road tax and insurance renewal status on the spot.
“During the Road Transport Department (RTD) roadblock, the motorist was unable to confirm his vehicle’s road tax and insurance renewal as the process had been handled by his wife.
“As a result, RTD officers issued him a physical summons. However, upon further checks at the RTD office, it was confirmed that the road tax and insurance had been duly renewed,” he said in a statement.
Lee pointed out that since the renewal was valid, the summons was not recorded in the system, and the motorist was informed accordingly.
The viral social media post related to the incident has since been deleted.
To prevent similar misunderstandings, Lee said Mukah RTD officers have been reminded by the state RTD director to issue a notice of inquiry instead of a summons in such situations.
He also advised road users to take precautionary steps by screenshotting their road tax and insurance details from the MyJPJ app or keeping printed copies for verification purposes.
“This simple measure ensures that drivers can provide the necessary documentation to enforcement officers, especially in areas with weak network coverage or if their mobile phone runs out of battery,” he said.
Lee assured that his ministry is committed to monitor the enforcement of traffic regulations while addressing challenges faced by road users.
