KAPIT: Residents of six longhouses along the Batang Rajang are set to gain easier access to schools, health centres, and nearby towns, with the RM21.3-million Nanga Melipis Ferry Terminal expected to be completed by December 10, 2026.

Works Minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, officiated the ground-breaking ceremony on Wednesday, accompanied by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law and Native Customs), Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, community leaders, and local residents who turned up to witness the historic moment.

The six longhouses set to benefit are Rumah Rambor, Rumah Untat, Rumah Mikai, Rumah Achai, Rumah Sigih, and Rumah Mulai, along with teachers and students of SK Ulu Melipis.

Nanta said the project reflects the government’s commitment to fulfilling promises and improving basic infrastructure for rural communities, particularly in transport and connectivity.

“The ferry will make daily life easier, cut travel time, and create new opportunities in education and the local economy,” he said on his Facebook post today.

He also confirmed that road construction along the left bank of the Batang Rajang river to the Nanga Yong bridge will continue to complement the ferry system and existing road network.

Nanta called on contractors, technical departments, and implementing agencies to cooperate closely to ensure early completion of the project.

He also urged community leaders to continue raising local concerns to the government to address the needs of residents promptly.

“The ceremony marks not only the start of a long-awaited project but also brings new hope for the communities around Nanga Melipis, ” he added.

“This shows that the government has not forgotten rural areas and is committed to balanced development for all.”
