SERIAN: Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (SJK) Chung Hua Serian now has a new academic block and a mini sports track worth RM3 million.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, said the project also includes the construction of a Confucius Garden and the Liu Tzu Memorial Garden, honoring a philanthropist who donated the school site as a gesture of gratitude and remembrance.
He said the new four-story academic block, which houses 12 classrooms, was an urgent necessity to replace the old block built in 1973.
“This reconstruction opens the opportunity for us to equip the school with basic digital infrastructure in preparation for our economy, as outlined in the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030.
“In this noble effort, SJK Chung Hua Serian is very fortunate that more than 50 per cent of the total cost is contributed by the Sarawak and Federal Governments.
“This shows the government’s commitment to supporting education regardless of background, as a cornerstone of human capital development as stated in the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he said.

He said this in his text of speech read by the Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, during the official opening of the new facilities at SJK Chung Hua Serian.
Abang Johari said the opening of the new block is a strategic government investment in building the future generation, who will not only be academically proficient but also possess the digital and technical skills needed to drive Sarawak’s economy toward greater progress and benefits.
“Every comfortable classroom and fully equipped sports track is a direct investment in producing a generation that is physically healthy and mentally sharp.
“It is a space where young minds are inspired, imaginations are nurtured, and a love of knowledge is cultivated,” he said.
He further added that a comfortable learning environment with good ventilation and lighting allows students to focus fully during lessons, thereby improving the effectiveness of teaching and learning.
Meanwhile, the fully equipped sports track serves as a training ground that builds discipline, mental resilience, and team spirit.
“This is what is meant by balanced and holistic education,” he emphasized.
SJK Chung Hua Serian was established in 1931 by the local Chinese community with sincere dedication, starting with just a single roofed house.
The school has now grown rapidly and has three building blocks, a sports track, a hall, and gardens.
