SARIKEI: Three public centres here have been given a fresh new look following upgrade works by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) to create a cleaner, more comfortable and conducive environment for residents and visitors.

The upgraded facilities are Medan Selera Sarikei, Sungai Rejang Market, and the MyKiosk site at Taman Susur Jambu, which are among the town’s main community hotspots.

Sarikei District Council (MDS) Chairman, Stephen Wong Kie Yong, said the project, worth over RM800,000, was implemented under the Urban Development Initiative.

“Through this initiative, we aim to beautify and improve public areas to make them more modern, comfortable and accessible for everyone,” he said.

Among the improvements made were the construction of dedicated walkways and parking spaces for persons with disabilities (PwD) at all three locations, along with the installation of 128 new sets of tables and chairs at Medan Selera Sarikei to provide better convenience for traders and visitors.

LED lighting was also installed across the upgraded sites to enhance brightness and safety, especially at night.

Wong said the upgrades reflected the government’s vision of building a sustainable, progressive and inclusive community while maintaining public cleanliness and wellbeing.

“With this facelift, we hope the improved facilities will attract more visitors and boost local economic activity,” he added.
