SIBU: Residents and industries in Rantau Panjang can expect a more stable water supply with the implementation of an acute water treatment plant to address months of disruptions.
Bawang Assan assemblyman Wong Soon Koh said the project has been approved and is now underway to resolve persistent supply issues affecting the shipbuilding zone, flats and nearby longhouses.
For months, affected areas have relied on daily water tanker deliveries due to irregular supply, an arrangement described as unsustainable and disruptive to both daily life and economic activities.
Wong said the matter had been consistently raised with the Sibu Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) and escalated to the Utilities Ministry for urgent intervention.
He added that the issue was also highlighted during the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, where he proposed a solution modelled after a similar facility in Sungai Sadit within the same constituency.
The new plant will have a capacity of five million litres per day, which is expected to meet current demand while allowing for future expansion to surrounding areas.
Construction began earlier this month and is scheduled for completion by Nov 2.
Wong expressed appreciation to the Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi for approving and expediting the project, as well as JBALB Sibu for its technical support.
Earlier today, Wong conducted a site visit to review progress, where he was briefed by project personnel led by Ms Ling, along with Councillor Wong Hua and a JBALB representative.
He said the project reflects how sustained engagement and cooperation with relevant agencies can deliver practical solutions to long-standing issues.
“This is not just about infrastructure, but restoring stability and confidence for the affected communities,” he said.
