SIMUNJAN: The newly completed Simunjan Hawker Centre, built at a cost of RM458,215, has become a new landmark for local economic development.

Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee said the facility, which provides 26 tables with capacity for 38 traders, is more than just a trading space but also serves as the heartbeat of Simunjan’s economy.

“This market is not only a place to sell vegetables, fruits, and dried goods, but it is the lifeline of Simunjan’s economic activity.

“The hawkers here are our unsung heroes, working daily to earn a living while ensuring residents have sufficient access to fresh supplies,” she told UKAS after officiating at the centre’s launch yesterday (Sept 23).

Rodiyah said the more comfortable environment was expected to help hawkers trade in a safer, more organised, and cleaner setting, attracting more customers and boosting household income.

She also encouraged vendors to cooperate with the Simunjan District Council in maintaining cleanliness and facilities, while noting plans to add awnings on both sides of the market in the future for greater comfort.

Meanwhile, Simunjan assemblyman Awla Dris said the project reflected strong collaboration between the federal and state governments in prioritising people’s wellbeing.

“This market demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing the best facilities for the people, especially in rural areas.

“I urge hawkers to maintain cleanliness, practise discipline, and make full use of this facility for the common good,” he said.

The project, implemented under the Batang Sadong parliamentary Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), began on Dec 11, 2023, and was completed on Dec 9, 2024, within the 12-month contract period.
