KUCHING: A newly opened ‘tanju’ in Kampung Simuti is set to emerge as Upper Padawan’s next tourism landmark, boosting community-based tourism and expanding nature-focused attractions in the area.

The open-air verandah, locally known as “Tanju” (KUD Ngerat), was officially opened on Sunday, marking a new addition to the growing list of community-driven tourism products in Puncak Borneo.

Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin described the initiative as timely, noting its potential to attract both local and international visitors, particularly nature enthusiasts seeking immersive outdoor experiences.

“This effort not only strengthens community-based tourism but also opens up economic opportunities for local residents,” he said, adding that it aligns with Sarawak’s broader push towards geopark development and ecotourism, sectors that are increasingly gaining global attention.

To start up with the project, Willie had allocated RM20,000 from his government grant for the construction of the tanju, which will serve as a camping platform where visitors can pitch tents and spend the night surrounded by nature.

Built entirely through gotong-royong by villagers of Kampung Simuti, the structure stands as a testament to strong community spirit and cooperation.

Once fully operational, the facility will be managed by the village’s Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), with proceeds channelled into the community’s coffers.

During the opening ceremony, Willie also announced an additional RM20,000 allocation for second-phase development works.

These include the construction of public toilets, dressing rooms and an observation tower aimed at enhancing visitor comfort and expanding the site’s appeal.

He expressed confidence that upon completion, the tanju and its accompanying facilities would position Kampung Simuti as a competitive tourism destination, comparable to established spots such as Kampung Sapit.

Perched amid lush greenery, the tanju already offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, making it an ideal retreat for those seeking tranquillity and scenic beauty.

“For nature lovers, this is the place to truly enjoy the beauty of the natural environment,” Willie said, expressing hope that the project will serve as a catalyst for further tourism-driven development in the area.

With its serene setting and community-driven approach, the Kampung Simuti tanju is set to become a distinctive highlight in Upper Padawan’s evolving tourism landscape.
