New Trusan water treatment plant to improve water supply

LAWAS: The proposed construction of a new 50 million litres per day (MLD) Trusan water treatment plant will provide a long-term solution to strengthen water supply capacity and support future growth in Trusan and its surrounding areas.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the new facility would significantly enhance the existing water supply system and meet rising demand from both residents and future developments.

Awang Tengah stressed the raw water intake component of the project must be carefully planned to ensure a reliable and sustainable source capable of supporting the plant’s long-term operations while taking into account changes in the river’s natural conditions.

“Although preliminary studies have been conducted, we need to reassess the location of the raw water intake to ensure the same problems do not recur in the future,” he said.

He said this during a working visit to the Trusan regional water treatment plant here on Thursday.

He said the government is also implementing immediate measures to address issues affecting the existing raw water intake system, including maintenance works and temporary mitigation efforts while the long-term solution is being developed.

“All related works must be expedited to safeguard uninterrupted water supply for residents and ensure the smooth implementation of critical water infrastructure projects,” he added.

The plant is part of the Sarawak government’s ongoing efforts to upgrade essential infrastructure, particularly water supply facilities, to support economic development and improve the quality of life for communities.

Once completed, the project is expected to increase treated water production capacity while providing a more sustainable and resilient water supply system for the areas.
