KUCHING: A 14-year-old boy and his family in Kampung Sungai Bandung have received assistance from non-governmental organisation, Hope Place Kuching, as they struggle to with financial hardship.

Mohammad Farid Amirul Kounen, once an active schoolboy, saw his life change drastically in March this year when he was involved in a motorcycle accident while riding as a pillion passenger without a helmet on his way to Friday prayers.

The accident left him with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), paralysed and bedridden.

Currently, Farid relies on a suction machine and tube feeding, and although he is unable to speak or move, he remains conscious and somewhat aware of his surroundings.

Farid lives with his parents and two younger siblings, aged five and nine.

His father, Kounen, 48, works as a daily-paid construction worker, while his mother, Norizan, 40, is a housewife and full-time caregiver to Farid.

“My heart is so full of sorrow now. I kept asking myself, what if Farid will be like this for life,” lament Norizan to Hope Place in a statement issued today.

To better care for Farid, the family, with help from his grandfather, has renovated their small home to accommodate his hospital bed and bulky medical equipment.

The family currently relies on RM500 monthly welfare assistance, along with a one-off contribution from Baitulmal.

Hope Place is supporting Farid with special milk supplement powder and expressed gratitude to a Serian Hospital social worker for alerting them to the case.
