KANOWIT: A RM12 million water supply project in Nibong Tada here has been completed ahead of schedule, boosting treated water capacity for rural communities here.
Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the Acute Water Supply System is now fully operational after being completed in less than a year since construction began in November last year.
The project, fully funded by the Sarawak government, includes two elevated tanks with capacities of 3.5 million litres and one million litres.
“Raw water supply from the Rajang River is sufficient and stable to support operations,” he said after a site visit on Monday.
Julaihi added that another key component under the Kanowit Water Supply Phase 2 project, a booster pump station at Jalan Durin, would further expand coverage.
He said the facility has a design capacity of 1.5 million litres per day and will receive supply from the upgraded Salim Water Treatment Plant.
The project also involves the installation of 55 kilometres of pipelines, including a diversion route via Sibu Jaya to improve distribution to targeted areas.
“The treated water will be channelled to a distribution tank in Bukong Jagoi with a capacity of 3.5 million litres per day,” he said.
Julaihi said both projects are part of the state government’s wider initiative involving nearly RM7 billion for about 360 water supply projects across Sarawak.
