KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg has ruled out declaring a public holiday following Kuching City FC’s Malaysia Cup triumph over Selangor.
He said such a move was not practical as it would affect working arrangements and public sentiment, noting that employers would have to pay double wages on public holidays.
He added that not everyone would welcome an additional public holiday, as some prefer normal working schedules.
Commenting on Kuching City FC’s performance in the Malaysia Cup semi-final second leg against Selangor on Saturday night (April 18), Abang Johari said the team’s 2-1 aggregate victory reflected steady improvement in Sarawak football.
“We have had problems with football in the past,” he acknowledged, saying that consistent efforts were needed to strengthen the sport’s development and competitiveness in the state.
He revealed that the state leadership had also assisted Kuching City FC, including settling certain financial matters, and had even contributed from its own resources to support the club’s progress.
“If you want quality players, you have to pay more,” he said at a press conference during the GPS Convention 2026 at BCCK here, adding that investment in talent was necessary to raise standards and attract better performers.
Abang Johari said the recent success was encouraging, noting that the victory over Selangor had boosted morale and demonstrated the effectiveness of continued support from the state leadership and GPS administration, he said.
