KUCHING: Police arrested a local man after intercepting a suspicious vehicle along Jalan Hui Sing, while two other occupants escaped on foot.
The incident drew public attention after a 46-second video of the arrest was uploaded on Facebook.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the incident occurred on May 8, when police conducting crime prevention patrols, spotted a vehicle being driven suspiciously in the Jalan Hui Sing area.
“Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to cooperate and sped off, prompting a chase before the vehicle was eventually intercepted by police.
“However, the driver and front passenger managed to flee the scene, leaving behind a man seated in the rear passenger section of the vehicle, who was later detained,” he said.
Further checks on the vehicle did not uncover any illegal items.
The suspect, who had no prior records and tested negative for drugs, was later taken to the police station for further investigation.
Alexson said the case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant from carrying out official duties.
If convicted, the man can be sentenced to prison for a term of up to two years, fined up to RM10,000, or both.
He also reminded the public not to speculate on the incident in a manner that could disrupt public order.
Those with information related to the case are urged to contact Kuching police operations centre at 082-244444.
