A total of 268 kg of various types of drugs were seized in Sarawak between January and April this year, marking a sharp increase compared to only 14kg recorded during the same period in 2025.
Women, Early Childhood and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the seizures, carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department in Sarawak, were estimated to have prevented more than 2.6 million instances of drug abuse and protected about 254,000 individuals from becoming involved in substance abuse within a month.
“The total seizures are estimated to have successfully prevented more than 2.6 million instances of drug use and protected approximately 254,000 individuals from being involved in drug abuse within a month,” she said in her ministerial winding-up speech during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today (May 19).
Fatimah said the achievement reflected the Sarawak government’s continued commitment to strengthening efforts in combating drug and substance distribution through more aggressive and integrated enforcement actions under the One Stop Committee for Addressing Drug and Substance Issues (OSC MIDS).
“Through an integrated enforcement approach under OSC MIDS, the Sarawak Government remains committed to strengthening efforts to curb the distribution of drugs and substances through more aggressive and coordinated enforcement action,” she said.
According to her, the success of the drug seizures was also attributed to the level of public awareness and cooperation in channelling information related to drug abuse and trafficking activities to the authorities.
“The success of these drug seizures was also contributed by the level of awareness and cooperation from the community in providing information related to drug abuse and trafficking activities to the authorities,” she said.
Fatimah added that this was the result of various awareness programmes implemented under OSC MIDS.
She also revealed that OSC MIDS had been informed of the appreciation expressed by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department at Bukit Aman for the Sarawak government’s continuous support to the NCID in Sarawak.
“The support provided by the Sarawak government, particularly in terms of logistics, vehicles and operational equipment, has helped strengthen operations, intelligence gathering and strategic enforcement coordination in Sarawak,” she said.
