KUCHING: More than 3,000 people are expected to converge on Kampung Peninjau Baru in Bau this Saturday (June 13) as the annual Serembu Gawai Open House returns, bringing together culture, entertainment and community spirit in one of the area’s most anticipated celebrations.
The event, organised by the Serembu Service Centre under the leadership of Serembu assemblyman, Datuk Miro Simuh, will be held at the Serembu Cultural and Community Centre (SCCC).
“We do Gawai Open House yearly, except in 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak,” Miro said, adding that the celebration continues to serve as a platform for residents to gather and celebrate the Gawai festival together.
Among the highlights of this year’s programme is a live performance by Kuala Lumpur-based singer, Lan Kristal, whose real name is Muhammad Razlan Mohamed Yusof.
Better known as Lan Solo, he rose to prominence as the original vocalist of the rock band, Kristal.
Several local artists will also take to the stage, while visitors can look forward to gong performances and traditional cultural showcases by groups representing villages throughout the Serembu constituency.
Organisers estimate attendance will reach around 3,000 visitors throughout the day, reflecting strong community support and continued enthusiasm for the annual event.
Over the years, the Serembu Gawai Open House has become a signature celebration in the constituency, promoting unity, cultural pride and appreciation of Bidayuh heritage.
Beyond the festivities, the open house is expected to generate economic activity for local communities, with small traders and food vendors from surrounding villages set to benefit from the influx of visitors.
Traditional delicacies and locally made crafts will also be featured during the celebration.
Preparations have been underway for several weeks to ensure smooth logistics, adequate seating and proper safety arrangements for the anticipated crowd.
The event also reflects Miro’s commitment to preserving Bidayuh cultural traditions while fostering inclusivity among the diverse communities in Bau and neighbouring areas.
Miro expressed hope that the gathering would further strengthen ties among residents and encourage greater community engagement.
Admission is free and open to the public, with visitors encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the full range of performances and activities planned throughout the day.
