Over 47 babies born in Kuching during Gawai and Agong’s birthday

KUCHING: As Sarawak celebrated the Gawai Dayak festival on June 1 and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s Birthday on June 2, hospitals around Kuching reported the joyful arrival of more than 47 babies coinciding with these significant dates.

The majority of the births were recorded at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), which reported 44 deliveries over the two-day period.

The births were evenly split between 22 girls and 22 boys, with 21 babies born on June 1 and 23 on June 2.

The breakdown of ethnicities among the June 1 babies includes seven Malay, six Iban, five Bidayuh, two Chinese, and one Dusun.

The following day, June 2, which was also part of the Gawai celebration and coincided with the Agong’s birthday, saw the birth of babies whose ethnicities comprised 11 Malay, seven Bidayuh, three Chinese, and two Iban.

The earliest baby was delivered at 1.05 am on June 1, while in the two-day period the heaviest weighed 3.63kg (Malay) and the lightest 2.09kg (Bidayuh).

Besides, Borneo Medical Centre (BMC) recorded two Chinese baby boys born on June 2, delivered at 10.40 am (2.53kg) and 11.53 am (2.36kg) respectively.

KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital reported the birth of a baby girl on June 1.

Meanwhile, Normah Medical Specialist Centre recorded no births, and Timberland Medical Centre did not disclose delivery information due to privacy reasons.
