Over 500 Navy veterans gather to celebrate Heroes’ Day

SIBU: The success of the Royal Malaysian Navy Veterans Association (PVTLDM) Sarawak which represents more than 200 members in the state in attending two ceremonies commemorating Heroes’ Day in Kuala Lumpur and Penang this year has strengthened ties with fellow veterans in the peninsula.

Its president, Warrant Officer 1 (B) Unyok Dasi said in a statement today (Nov 27) that the ceremony at the National Monument, Kuala Lumpur was organised by the Malaysian Army Chinese Veterans Association (MACVA) on Sept 21 while the latest event attended was in Penang organised by the Penang Security Veterans Association (PSVA) recently.

According to him, the recent event was attended by more than 500 veterans from all over the country as well as from abroad including Australia, Great Britain, Canada, Nepal, New Zealand and Thailand and was held at Padang Kota, Penang.

He said that the guest of honour at the ceremony was the Chief Minister of Penang, Chow Kon Yeow and also present was Bukit Bendera Member of Parliament, Syerleena Abdul Rashid. Meanwhile, in the evening they attended a dinner at the Penang Sports Club.

“The organisers are very excited about our presence to enliven the ceremony even though we came from afar and are hopeful we would be able to fulfill their invitations in the coming years.

“Our success in accepting the invitations not only introduces PVTLDM Sarawak and strengthens ties with veteran friends in the peninsula but also as a sign of recognition to the association, members and veterans of Sarawak as a whole,” Unyok added.

In the meantime, he said PVTLDM Sarawak is planning activities next year including supporting and strengthening ties among members of the association throughout Sarawak.
