MIRI: The Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS) conducted various mass vaccination programs throughout the year 2023 in the Miri division, resulting in the vaccination of a total of 6,510 dogs.
Transport Minister cum Senadin assemblyman Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said this year, up to now, Miri has not experienced any cases of rabies infection.
Lee stated that this proactive approach is a crucial step in preventing the transmission of the deadly virus to humans and other animals.
“By vaccinating a large number of dogs, we are working towards creating a safer environment for both the community and the animals. This initiative not only protects the health and well-being of the dogs themselves, but also helps in preventing future outbreaks of rabies,” Lee told local media after visiting a mass vaccination programme held at Taman Awam Miri this morning (Feb 25).
He said the success of this vaccination campaign is a testament to the importance of proactive measures in controlling the spread of infectious diseases.
Lee added that Miri DVSS will also conduct and collect random samplings in their upcoming programme this March.
“In order to ensure the health and well-being of our canine companions, random sampling will be conducted as part of our preventive measures. These samplings will help us identify any potential health risks or issues that may be affecting our dogs. By collecting and analysing data from these random samples, we can proactively address any concerns and provide appropriate care and treatment as needed. Our goal is to keep our furry friends healthy and happy, and these random samplings are an important tool in achieving that objective,” Lee stated.
The programme will be held on March 2 and 3 at Desa Senadin (near to Nam Leong Supermarket) and March 9 to 10 at Dewan Dato Permaisuri, Permyjaya.
“Presently, The DVSS Miri has collected three random samples on dogs for rabies, and it is an essential part of public health efforts to prevent the spread of this deadly virus….and all these three samples had turned out to be negative for rabies,” he disclosed.
