KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has announced that nine Ramadan Bazaars will be organised across its administrative area in 2025.

These bazaars, a mix of community- and privately-led initiatives, have been an annual event since 2008, ensuring a structured and well-regulated marketplace for vendors and consumers during the fasting month.

“The organization of community- and privately-led Ramadan Bazaars allows for better management and ensures a controlled and safe environment for traders and visitors alike,” according to a press statement by MPP today (Feb 18).

“The initiative aims to provide strategic trading locations, encourage interaction among different ethnic groups, and foster a sense of unity within the community.  It also promotes the concept of ‘For The Community, By The Community’, empowering local groups to self-manage their activities.

“For 2025, the Ramadan Bazaar Committee will oversee the coordination and execution of the event across the nine designated sites.

“The organising committee is chaired by Cr Madhi Tomi, with Cr Abang Ismawi Abang Ali, MPP deputy chairman, serving as the patron and advisor.

“Four of the nine locations will be managed by community groups, while five will be run by private entities. The community-managed sites include Taman Malihah (66 stalls), Matang Jaya (20 stalls), Kota Sentosa (60 stalls), and Kota Padawan (15 stalls).”

Meanwhile, the private sector will oversee Emart Batu Kawa (60 stalls), Emart Matang (60 stalls), Prince Commercial Centre (40 stalls), Swan Commercial Centre (40 stalls), and Jalan Batu Kawa (Ninso Batu Kawa) (40 stalls).

In total, the 2025 Ramadan Bazaars will feature 401 stalls, providing ample opportunities for traders and food enthusiasts.

“To ensure high standards of hygiene and ethical business practices, MPP is collaborating with community and private organisers, along with the Kuching Division Health Office, the Ministry of Domestic Trade (KPDN), and the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (JAIS).”

Health education programmes and dialogue sessions will be conducted for bazaar participants, while routine inspections will be carried out in partnership with government agencies.

“Central Cold Storage Kuching Sdn Bhd (CCK) has once again been named the main sponsor for the Ramadan Bazaars within MPP’s jurisdiction.”
