KUCHING: The Padungan Community Fire Safety Programme will return for its third edition on Jun 13, with stronger emphasis on emergency response preparedness and neighbourhood cooperation in improving safety within the old township area.
Jointly organised by the Padungan/Tunku Abdul Rahman Road (North) Community Development and Safety Committee (JKKK) and the Padungan Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the programme will be held from 2pm to 4pm at the department’s compound.
Organisers said this year’s “3.0” edition was introduced following overwhelming response from the community over the past two years, with added focus on community-based response mechanisms and immediate action during emergencies.
They noted that Padungan Old Town is a densely populated area with active commercial activities, making effective communication, neighbourly cooperation and quick emergency response crucial in the event of fires or unforeseen incidents.
“Those year’s programme will further strengthen awareness on neighbourhood cooperation, fire prevention responsibilities and emergency evacuation preparedness, with the aim of cultivating a safety culture where everyone understands basic fire safety and knows how to respond during emergencies,” they said.
Padungan Bomba station chief Mohamad Meramit is expected to attend the programme in support of grassroots fire safety education efforts.
Meanwhile, organising chairman Morgan Kon said the committee hoped such programmes would continuously remind residents and business operators that fire safety should become part of everyday awareness and responsibility rather than remain merely a slogan.
“Fire safety requires long-term education and collective community participation. Older townships especially need stronger preventive measures and mutual assistance mechanisms to minimise losses when accidents happen,” he said.
This year’s programme mainly targets hotel operators, food and beverage businesses, as well as traders from various industries in the Padungan area.
