PAKU: A grassroots clean-up effort at the Paku Rock Maze Garden has set the stage for an upcoming heritage festival, highlighting the community’s push to transform the site into a cultural and eco-tourism draw.

Paku Kapitan Pui Shak Sin said the initiative reflects a growing sense of ownership among residents as preparations intensify for the “Green & Gold Experience”, scheduled from Apr 30 to May 3.

The mass clean-up, held on Apr 18, brought together local residents, youth leaders and volunteers, who worked to clear overgrown pathways and remove rubbish within the limestone maze.

According to a press release, the programme, organised with the support of HWPL Malaysia, also included a guided walkthrough of the site, offering participants a closer look at the area’s heritage and historical significance.

Pui, who has spearheaded the development of the site over the past four years, said the transformation of the once-overlooked rocky landscape had not been without challenges.

“We don’t want people to come here just to see the scenery, but to understand our culture and our history.

“When they walk through this place, listen to its stories, and experience it, it helps build a sense of belonging, especially for the younger generation to reconnect with their hometown,” he said.

He added that sustained community effort would be key to ensuring the site’s long-term potential as a tourism asset.

HWPL Malaysia president Ning Bong echoed the sentiment, noting that heritage spaces such as Paku play an important role in fostering unity.

“As we work towards building peace, it is important for communities to understand and appreciate each other’s history.

“Places like Paku create opportunities for people to connect through shared stories and experiences, which helps foster greater unity,” she said.

The four-day “Green & Gold Experience” aims to showcase Paku’s identity through a mix of cultural performances, workshops and sustainability-focused activities.

Visitors can also explore the Forest Breeze Market, featuring local crafts and traditional food, as part of efforts to position the Paku Rock Maze Garden as a distinctive destination blending nature, heritage and community spirit.
