BINTULU: Parents must take a more proactive role in ensuring their children fully benefit from the Sarawak government’s free tertiary education initiative, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
He said the initiative is aimed at enhancing academic achievement and improving social mobility among the younger generation, stressing that family support plays a crucial role in student success.
“Success does not depend solely on individual effort, but also on strong support from the family,” he said when speaking at the Pengerami Ngabang Gawai Begulai event organised by Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Kakus Branch here yesterday (May 2).

He added that the education scheme is open to all Sarawakian students regardless of background and covers a wide range of fields, including science, accounting and law.
“Therefore, children must be given attention and encouragement so they study diligently and achieve excellent results,” he said.
Uggah noted that students can take advantage of the initiative at Sarawak-owned higher learning institutions such as i-CATS University College, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, Curtin University Malaysia and the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS).
At the event, 19 students received PBB education incentives for 2026, comprising seven SPM students, eight diploma students and four degree students.
In a related development, Uggah announced that the RM50 million Sungai Arip road project will be put up for tender in July to enhance rural connectivity, involving routes from Sekolah Arip to Rumah Mambang, Rumah Laja and Rumah Anas.
